Israel and Hamas have agreed to cooperate with Gaza to stop fighting and release hostages, the US and Qatari mediator said.
If Israeli ministers and the government formally approve the deal, which has yet to happen, the first six-week phase will go into effect on January 19.
The agreement follows 15 months of fighting between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian armed group and political group.
The current war began when hundreds of Hamas fighters attacked Israel’s southern border on October 7, 2023, killing nearly 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages back to Gaza.
Israel responded with military action, starting with the bombing of the same plane and then a full-scale attack that began on 27 October. Since then, Israel has attacked Gaza by land, sea and air, while Hamas has attacked Israel with rockets.
