Shakur Stevenson criticized Gervonta Davis in an interview, pointing out that he used the weight stipulations of his opponents and facing “less talented fighters” to make himself look better than he was.
WBC lightweight champion Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) fumed when told Gervonta wasn’t impressed with his record and asked him what he had done in his career to want to fight him. Tank ruled out any possibility of fighting Shakur, considering him unworthy to meet the King. That is true. Shakur is completely incapable of being in his presence.
It’s Shakur’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, who has discussed the idea of him fighting Tank Davis in 2025. Hearn slated 2025 for the Newark, New Jersey native, talking about him fighting the three:
- Floyd Schofield
- William Zepeda
- Gervonta Davis
Now, Shakur is even babbling like the Tank Davis fight is a foregone conclusion without him saying anything. Tank is like, ‘What is this guy talking about?’ Shakur is like a spoiled child, used to getting whatever he wants and cringing when someone tells him no.
Stevenson needs to give Edwin De Los Santos a rematch, prove he can fight without a run, and then face Andy Cruz. The Cuban talent is a better version of Shakur, but with attack, strength and a desire to engage. If Cruz were a computer, it would be the next generation above Shakur, a clunky, outdated model from the early 2000s that freezes on the pages.
Accusations of weight loss
“He just doesn’t seem right.” No disrespect to him, but I’m a real person. “I’m not going to go out there and act like Tank’s not a good fighter,” Shakur Stevenson said. Boxing Newsresponding to being told that Gervonta Davis said he wasn’t impressed with his record, and dismissed rumors of the two meeting in the ring because he sees no value in fighting Shakur.
“The same way he asks me what I did for boxing, I think he should look in the mirror and ask the same question because it’s like what have you done?” Shakur continued of Tank Davis. “Even the guys you knocked out were all on the weight clause, the weight loss. It looks good to the public and people who don’t know, but I’m a fighter. I know what’s going on. I know what you’re doing.
“You take less talented fighters and put them in the ring with you and make them look like they’re on his level, but they’re not. “Until he fights an elite level fighter, I don’t want to hear anything from him,” Shakur said.
What Gervonta says is 100% true. Who did Shakur fight during his career? Nobody good. He beat a couple of empty fighters at 130, won three titles on paper against weak opposition and has looked hella bad since moving up to 135. He was booed out of the arena in his fight against Edwin De Los Santos and the fans ran out of his ride in his last fight against Artem Harutyunyan last July in his hometown the city of Newark.
“Fight someone I fought!”
“He (Tank) acted like he couldn’t get a lot of people in the ring.” Why didn’t he try to get Edwin De Los Santos? Why wouldn’t that be the fight you want? Since you want to talk bad about me, you fight someone I fought against. And you talked about my performance. So outdo me,” Shakur said.
A tank fight against Edwin De Los Santos wouldn’t do anything for him and his career because the guy hasn’t fought in 14 months. He would come off a loss to Stevenson, and by the time Gervonta fights him in August or September, he would have been inactive for 21 months.
Shakur’s stock has plummeted since De Los Santos exposed him as a chicken runner on November 16, 2023. He has done nothing to turn things around by pursuing a rematch with him or looking bold in his next fight against the easy-going Arten Harutyunyan.
